Section Two (30 marks)

Begin your answer on a fresh page.
You are advised to write between 250 and 350 words for this section. You should read the information carefully and plan your answer before beginning to write.

As part of National Education, your class will be going on a Learning Journey. Your form teacher has provided you with brochures on three possible places of interest.

Battle Box at Fort Canning

The Battle Box at Fort Canning
• Re-creates the underground Battle Box used by the British forces during Second World War.
• Demonstrates how military operation was controlled and monitored by the British.
• Presents the last few days before Singapore fell to the Japanese in 1942.
• Students will learn that war is inherently destructive. It can only be avoided if we have the will to build a deterrent force strong enough to prevent others from attacking us.

Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Learning Centre
• Traces Singapore’s journey in bidding to host the world’s first YOG.
• Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect, through stories of famous Olympians, including local youth athletes
• Interactive exhibits of sports equipment used in the 26 sports in the YOG.
• Students can also sign up to be a Learning Centre guide during their visits. This can be a part of their school’s Community Involvement Programme (CIP).

Singapore Mint

Singapore Mint
• How Singapore developed from a nation without its own currency to one of the first in the world moving towards electronic cash
• Through the ancient coins used in Singapore from the 19th century to present day, visitors will receive a glimpse of Singapore’s historical, economic, cultural and political progress
• Technologies involved in manufacturing coins
• Exhibits also include coins that the Mint has manufactured for both Singapore and many other countries in the world

As the Class Chairperson, you need to select the best Learning Journey for your class to learn about and appreciate Singapore’s history, as well as develop a sense of national pride.

Decide which Learning Journey is the best for the purpose.

Write a speech to your class to inform them of your proposed choice for this Learning Journey. The speech should clearly state the reasons why your choice is the best and all other relevant details to interest and convince your classmates of your choice.
