Reasons to celebrate 40 years of Singapore
(Adapted from an article in The Straits Times)
Food Paradise: I’m spoilt for choice when it comes to food, being fortunate enough to live within easy walking distance of some great options. I’m not alone; many Singaporeans live with convenient access to crowded bounty.
Mother Nature: One of my former university professors was in town last week. I took him for a long, sweaty walk in MacRitchie Reservoir. We spied on long-tailed macaques grooming themselves and feeding in the forest. We spotted the greater racquet-tailed drongo and the striped tit warbler. Just when you want to see one, the monitor lizard proved elusive. It always amazes me how urban, built-up Singapore still retains pockets of nature.
Orchard Roard: This will always be my No. 1 even though I’m no shopaholic. There is a myriad of happenings at the malls throughout the day and most of the nights. Along the road, the swaying angsana trees are beautiful, and the people on the mall look so well dressed, youthful and on the go.
3 marks of “civilization” Singapore should avoid
(Excerpt from a letter written by a tourist to The Straits Times)
Litter: ….we have observed that careless discarding of litter and rubbish is showing up more frequently in parks…
Obesity: …fast food restaurants have helped create a nation of “super sized” (overweight) people. Judging from our day-to-day observations in Singapore – and how crowded the fast food restaurants were daily – majority of the populace is simply weighing too much.
Cigarettes: The truly disturbing trend is the number of young people, clearly under 21, who smoke in Singapore.
A teacher has asked you to write an article entitled “Life in Singapore” for a writing competition organised by the tourism board. If selected, your article will be featured in their monthly publication.
In your article, you are to consider the points made by the journalist and tourist. You should promote Singapore as an exciting and interesting place and a good environment to live in.
Remember to develop ONLY the points raised in the excerpts above. It should be written in clear, accurate English and in a tone appropriate to the purpose of your writing task.
