The Twenty Elements of Effective Writing


1.  You should always have a dictionary wtih you and use it regularly. 

2.  Always think before you write.

3.  Order your thoughts because meaningul communication is the goal. 

4.  Begin writing by using conventional (socially accepted standards) language and simple sentences.

5.  Always find the best word for your purpose. 

6.  Use dynamic verbs - and use tehm in the active voice.

7.  Use punctuation marks accurately.

8.  Always write clearly.

9.  Always write specifically. 

10.  Always be concise - choose the correct words to express your thoughts succinctly.

11.  Always be consistent.

12. Vary your writing. 

13. Remember to elaborate - Don't jsut tell, show!

14. Be conscious of order and rhythm.



15. Always keep your reader in mind - Yes, people are interested in what you write.

16. Revise and rewrite - The beautiful part of writing is that you don't have to get it right the first time, unlike, say, a brain surgeon. 



17. Practise writing on your own, at your own time, not just in class. 

18. Write fluently, accurately and fairly quickly.


19. Good penmanship is important. 



20. Time management is everything.  Do not leave out any section of the writing examinations unattempted.
